Not Dead Yet!
Until ageism started being associated with me, it always felt distant and inconsequential. But now I get it. Ouch!Let’s face it, we live in a world where age can often be used as a measure of competency. But is that wrong? I’m certainly not the guy saying age doesn’t matter especially when it comes to employment. I think it's only natural for employers to have concerns about one's physical capabilities to fulfill a job role when looking at a pool of potential talent. While aging is an inevitable part of life and it’s a fact that you slow down somewhat as you age, there's plenty you can do to push back the hands of time. If you work at it, it’s possible to remain active and capable. To provide some evidence that I am still somewhat fit, I’ve created some short videos. You can see them by selecting the links below. You’ll notice I divided the videos into different segments as I wanted to convey different types of fitness. Historically, I was only focused on strength and aerobic fitness. However, in the past year, I've integrated more variety into my workouts. This includes more plyometrics, flexibility, agility, and balance training. It’s made a difference in terms of how I feel and move in really positive ways.
Incline Press
I always start out super light and then progress to heavier loads. My goal has changed from getting "jacked" to not getting hurt. But I still periodically do some heavier loads to retain that ability.
Leg Press
I still do squats and lunges, but I generally reduce the weight to save the knees. But I do like going heavy on the leg press. Yeah, that last lift in the video is a 1000 lbs of plates.
Overhead Press
I'm not sure how I feel about this video. I wanted to demonstrate strength, but standing against the bare wall makes me look like a cadaver!
Curls
Again, start light and progressively move up...
Plyometrics
Over the past year, I've integrated more variety into my workouts. This includes more plyometrics, flexibility, and balance training.
Balance
It's a miracle I haven't gotten hurt on the Skillboard. I'm doing it on a roller here, but it comes with heavy-duty balls that resemble a basketball. Those things move all over the place! My big "win" for the year was learning to juggle. It's a skill that has always seemed impossible. However, it turns out it is very doable with just a little bit of work.
Pullups | Dips | Toes to Bar
Honestly, it's hard to come up with an excuse not to exercise when places like "Original Muscle Beach" at the Santa Monica Pier exist nearby. This workout area actually predates Venice's "Muscle Beach" made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger. This area dates back to the 1940's and showcased the physical abilities of Jack Lalanne and others.
Slam Ball
The 15 lbs slamball is something I've just recently added. It's a great workout and feels different on the body than weights but in a really positive way.
Rings
The rings are something of my nemesis, especially the traveling rings. I like them, but every time I use them I generally end up with some type of injury.
